It is very apparent to me that today’s publishing sales person has made great strides to evolve into a flourishing species. This new evolutionary period has been a transition from survival to growth. Then again, some would say that their iPhone and tablet is now essential to their survival on earth. However, I think our early ancestors would have to disagree.
What has been crucial to the sales person’s survival lies in audience data. To ensure this continued cycle of growth, publishing sales species must either adapt their sales strategies and tactics, or become extinct to their company, clients, and the market in general—and we definitely don’t want that to happen. We can’t have another woolly mammoth on our hands here.
We are constantly evolving and adapting to fit into our environment. I am sure that someday our tablet will be a technology of the past and future generations will look at us like we are dinosaurs. However, I treasure the world we live in and how it’s evolved in my short 26 years on earth.
As a sales person, you need to be thinking of new ideas and solutions if you want to stay relevant. If not, like our friends in the Paleolithic era, you might just become extinct.
